Greater Adjutant (Leptoptilos dubius)

Interesting :

Is in the family of the greatest adjutant in Thailand.The male and female have the same characteristics. Its head and neck have brownish pink skin and it has small hair. There are black freckle skin on the side of its neck , and white bushy hair around its neck and shoulder which looks like the garland. The hair of its wing and tail is black, and the hair under the neck and on its chest is white. The outstanding characteristic of the greater adjutant is the air sac which looks like the balloon on its chest and this air sac can expand and contract.

Habitat :

Can be found in India, Thailand, Myanmar, Lao, and Vietnam. In Thailand, it can be found on the shoreline, the field and the grassland.

Food :

The greater adjutant is the omnivorous bird which eats fish, shrimp, frogs, tadpoles, snakes, and putrid carcass. It sometimes ravishes the food from the vulture.

Behavior :

Seeks for the food in the swamp, field, lake, and outdoor. It is the voiceless bird and normally hovers around in the sky which is the same as the hawk and the vulture. It likes to stay alone or in a small troop. It migrates back and forth among India, Thai, and Cambodia.

Reproductive :

The greater adjutant breeds during August to March. It builds the nest on the tall tree or the limestone mountaintop. It uses dry branches, roughly weaving into nest which has a small basin in the middle. It normally builds several nests on the same tree, mixing with other bird’s nests. The female lays 3 to 4 eggs each time. In the breeding season, the neck skin will be dark red.

It has the body size of approximately 145 centimeters.
